History
At Lime Tree Primary School, we believe that all children should become reflective and critical thinking historians, who ask the ‘So what?’ questions and can recognise cause and effect. The History curriculum at Lime Tree is designed so that students develop their knowledge of not only British but world History in a way in which one topic builds on and supports the understanding of another. For example, the relationship and similarities between the Vikings in Britain during the 7th and 8th century and World War II.
History, as a subject, is divided into three strands. These are prevalent in each time period taught and in every year group across the school. The strands are taught discreetly or separately depending on the need of the subject. The strands are: Chronology, Historical understanding and Historical enquiry.
As a subject History can be taught as a stand-alone subject but when possible is used as a vehicle for cross curricular activities like: writing, reading, acting, speaking, listening and digital literacy.
Successful historians at Lime Tree will leave the school with a knowledge of a range of important historical periods and a range of tools that can be used in History, across other subjects and their lives. This could be crucial life skills like: asking and answering questions, challenging given information or researching topics.

Year 1 Milestones
Skill
To be able to order events or objects based on their age.
To be able to use a range of sources to find features of the past.
To know that there are different ways to find out about the past.
To be able to sort artefacts into then and now.

Knowledge
To know that there is a past, present and future.
To know that places change over time.

Year 2 Milestones

To begin to discuss the relevance of sources.
Knowledge
To know who Florence Nightingale and Mary Anning were.
To know that Florence Nightingale changed hospital practices.
To know that the first powered flight was in 1903 by the Wright brothers.
To know the Great fire of London happened in 1666.
To know that Samuel Pepys diary was essential in knowing about the Great fire of London.
Year 3 Milestones
Skill
To be able to place events on a timeline using dates.
To make comparisons between times studied and their lives today.
To be able to identify different ways to represent the past.
To begin to understand bias in historical sources.
To be able to discuss the reliability of sources.
Knowledge
To know that the Egyptian period was from 3150 BCE to 30 CE.
To know about the pyramids.
To know that the different ages have different weapons, houses and tools.
To know that Romans invaded Britain.
To know that Romans brought change to Europe. E.g. roads and military.
Year 4 Milestones
Skill
To be able to place events on a timeline with greater accuracy.
To be able to assess the relevance and suitability of sources.
To be able to ask pertinent questions and identify relevant answers.
To be able to identify key features of the time periods studied.
To be able to use evidence to build a picture of the time studied.
Knowledge
To know that the Anglo-Saxons came from Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.
To know the Anglo - Saxons created a unified England.
To know the Vikings and Anglo - Saxons battled for control of Britain.
To know that a Dynasty is a succession of rulers from the same family.
To know that the Shang were the first Dynasty to keep written records.
Year 5 Milestones

Knowledge
To know Tudor kings and queens.
To know what life was like during Tudor times.
To know that the Greeks created many customs still used today. E.g. Olympics, Government.
To know that the Greeks ruled in city states.
To know the Mayans are different to the Aztecs.
To know that the Mayans created their own calendar and built Chichen-Itza.
Year 6 Milestones

To know that Benin was an African Kingdom.

To know that society changes as history progresses.
